I liked how Dr. Peale would put tips after each chapter in his books. He would show how to put into practice what he had written.
I started to try a few. It was interesting that Dr. Peale would use Bible verses and show how to use them practically. I tried not to pay much attention to the Bible verse, but I liked the practical tip.
I began to try these out, and lo and behold, they seemed to work. I was getting so good at putting these tips into practice that the people in stores called me their favorite customer.
I still wasn't too sure about these Bible verses. I started to type out the tips from the books, but I would leave out the Bible verse. I didn't like to see the verses.
Believe it or not, this went on for years. I even started buying Dr. Peale's cassette tapes and listening to them.
I like everything Dr. Peale said in these tapes except for a few things. One of the biggest was, "Do you want this overcoming life? It will cost you! All of you! You give your life to Jesus, and He will give you all of Him!"
This kind of talk irritated me! I wasn't about to give my life to Jesus! I saw people who said they were followers of Jesus, and they were nothing like what I wanted to be like! I'd turn the tape off!
I praise the Lord that He didn't give up on me. It was going to take a long time.
"Write down for the coming generation what the Lord has done, so that people not yet born will praise Him." Psalm 102:18
