I don't know whether mowing in my bathing suit had anything to do with the story that follows. At the time, I only thought about getting a tan. But it was poor judgment on my part, looking back.
Bill had been transferred out of state, and Todd and I were alone again. Evidently, this news had spread around the neighborhood.
It was around 3:00 AM when I heard banging at our door. I got out of bed and saw 2 men and what looked like a teenage boy banging on the door. The 2 men acted drunk. I also noticed a pickup truck was parked in the street. I recognized the one guy. He was our neighbor, two doors away.
I heard the 2 men talking, saying they knew I was home alone and that they might try the basement door. I quickly ran down the basement to make sure the door was locked. They tried the door, but couldn't get inside, so they left.
I wasn't sure what to do. I couldn't call 911 because the neighbor was the sheriff in town. I had no idea who the other man was. He might have been a deputy.
Let me tell you, this was a terrifying experience to put it mildly.
The next morning, bright and early, Todd and I walked the two doors down and told his wife what had happened. This woman was twice my size, so I knew she could handle him.
When I told her what happened the night before, and described the truck and who was with her husband, she was furious!
I had to half-way smile when she stomped right into the bedroom where he was still in bed, sleeping off his night on the town. She started to scream at him, and he knew he was in big trouble, to put it mildly!
I was still frightened, so I told my Las Vegas friend what had happened. She said she would bring Cindy, and the two of them would stay with me at night until Bill came home.
Looking back, mowing in my bathing suit wasn't the wisest thing I should have done, but these men trying to break in were wrong!
Once again, God took care of me! Another reason why I praise Him.
"Write down for the coming generation what the Lord has done, so that people not yet born will praise Him." Psalm 102:18
